How to solve the problem of a sensitive stomach
I don't know about you and yours but as my dog has got older her feeding habits have changed. When she first came to me she was a bit of a fussy eater anyway - wouldn't eat dried food alone and would turn her nose up at lower quality food - but she also has a bit of a sensitive tummy and if you don't get things quite right you'll have problems one end or the other!
When she was younger she had two meals a day; breakfast in the morning and dinner on a night. As she became older breakfast time got more and more awkward, in that she was less and less inclined to eat it and I wasn't the sort to leave it out all day for her - I don't think that's good for dogs, they need a routine with food like everything else.
So in the end we gave up and decided to feed her just once a day - I knew other dogs that were fed like this so I thought I'd give it a go. She got her other usual food items during the day - something for her teeth, a few biscuits around lunch and then her main meal at night.
By the time we got to dinner time she was so hungry she wolfed it down and sometimes we had a few, let's call them 'consequences'. If we tried going back to two meals we still had the same problem as before, so I needed to find another solution.
I don't remember exactly how we came to this but I have a feeling someone mentioned it in passing and then one day I found this product on Amazon by chance. I looked at it some more, read the reviews from other people and their dogs having similar issues and how it had helped them, and decided to give it a try.

When it arrived it seemed just as knobbly and odd as it did in the picture, but we washed it out and fed Lady with it that very night. Now it was a little bit trickier to use if you're like me and you had to mix a 'wet' food with a dry mixer, but I soon got used to it and so did Lady!
The way it's designed means that your dog has to eat around the 'prongs' or lumps and that, in effect, slows them down and means they're not gulping down their food as if they'd never been fed in their life before! Basically it worked - for us anyway. She slowed down her eating and this meant her food settled in her stomach much better, and as a result we had no 'consequences' ever again. If your dog has suffered from a similar situation and eats faster than a speeding train, followed by the buffet car having a 'nasty accident' a few minutes later, then you might want to give this a go. I for one (and there are certainly others) would heartily recommend it - and it was so nice not having to clean up the mess... |
