Duran Duran - Their Greatest Music

Source: via Amazon.com
The Best Band of the 80s

Well, in my opinion anyway. What do you think? Are they high on your 'favourite 80s band' list?

I was just at the right 'teen' age in the eighties to see the start of the New Romantics and for it to take a hold of me. Never heard of it? It was the glamorous reaction to punk of the late seventies and a step on from the initial electro-pop of Kraftwerk and the like. Bands like Spandau Ballet, Visage and of course, Duran Duran. This Greatest album is a collection of their greatest hits - hence the name of course.

Duran Duran's first single was Planet Earth, which came out in 1981, and was from their self-titled album released in the same year, but it wasn't until the Rio album of 1982 that the full effect of the band was felt. The video age of the 1980s really began at this time and Duran Duran had a big influence on this. Their videos for Hungry Like the Wolf and Save a Prayer were filmed in Sri Lanka and the Rio single was filmed on a yacht in Antigua. The exotic locations just added to the thrill the band was having on the teenage girls of the era.

What Duran Duran Meant To Me

The eighties was a great time to be a teenager and I loved the music. Finding your feet through music, as you grow up and learn about yourself and what you like, is a great experience never to be repeated. I wasn't a 'Duranie' (God forbid!), I didn't scream down the high street when I saw a picture of the band in a shop window. I was a Duran Duran fan - a proper one - and I remain one to this day. I still prize my vinyl collection of 7" and 12" singles and LPs.

Somehow Duran Duran epitomized the eighties for me. Their music was brilliant and different (I don't think anyone writes lyrics like Simon le Bon), they looked equally amazing and they just had that 'thing'. The thing that makes you a fan, that makes you loyal and dedicated to the cause, that means no-one can say a bad word about them. (Well they can, but you won't agree with it.)

The Greatest Hits

I love Duran Duran and their music. They made some timeless classics and they're still going strong today. This album will take you down memory lane if you remember the eighties well, and if you're new to their music it will give you a flavour of their best.

Some of my personal favourite are on here; Save a Prayer, Rio, Girls on Film, Ordinary World, New Moon on Monday and loads more. If you haven't got a Duran Duran album I heartily recommend this one. Plus, if you take a quick look below you can see some of the videos of the songs from the album.

Enjoy the best of Duran Duran...

A (very) brief history of their videos...

We started off with this: Planet Earth - classic New Romantic stuff; the term is even used in the song if you listen...
Rio - THE 80s classic music video.
And we ended up with this: The Wild Boys - the height of video storytelling and development for the era.
